Last week, students from Connersville Middle School (Connersville, Indiana) had the rare privilege of experiencing all three U.S. government branches in a single trip to Washington D.C. They not only toured the Capitol, but also the White House and the Supreme Court building. Furthermore, they had a private meeting with Judge John Roberts, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court!
Before proceeding to the Supreme Court, a security officer from the canine unit met the group to investigate both buses. With lights flashing, the officer escorted the group up Capitol Hill to the Supreme Court. After passing through further security at the building entrance, the students were taken to the East conference room for their meeting with Judge Roberts. The students quickly noted how beautiful the room was, with high ceilings, carved wood paneling and two huge chandeliers. Portraits of the first eight Chief Justices hung on the walls. Judge Roberts came into the room, introduced himself, and told the students a little history about the Supreme Court and the Justices. The students then asked him questions about his job, his views on different issues, and his family life. He answered each question with poise and humor. Janet Pezze, the Scholastica Travel tour leader commented, “After a while, you almost forgot that you were talking to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. It felt like you were talking to an old friend! It was an amazing experience and one the students won’t soon forget!”
The Connersville students also toured 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! Touring the White House requires pre-planning and a request submitted through one’s Member of Congress. Not every request is granted, but Connersville was of good fortune! Finally, the students also experienced the home of our legislative branch at the Capitol. They viewed the crypt, the dome of the capitol, and Statuary hall. What a fantastic, educational opportunity!
